WHO AM I
Who is Zerbin Singleton? He is a man of God, a Major in the United States Marine Corps, a man of Omega Psi Phi, and an aspiring astronaut. He is living a life characterized by perseverance, hard work, and overcoming adversity. He was born in 1984, in Anchorage, Alaska, to a drug addicted mother, and a father he would not know until he was 15. He was surrounded by domestic violence, drugs, poverty, and sometimes even homelessness.
At nine years old his mother was incarcerated and Zerbin was sent to live with his cousin and her husband in Decatur, Georgia. They became his mother and father and provided a sense of family, security, and stability in his life. Even with this change in environment, he continued to face and overcome trials and tribulations.
During his high school years Zerbin established himself as an exceptional student, leader, and athlete, becoming class president and valedictorian. Seven days before high school graduation he was struck and injured by a drunk driver, derailing his plans to attend the United States Naval Academy.
Zerbin also began to establish a strong and growing relationship with his biological father. Only a few years later, his father committed suicide.
Despite these obstacles, Zerbin never gave up on his dreams and has defied the odds. During college, he enjoyed a standout career on the football field, where he earned Disney's Wide World of Sports Spirit Award and the FedEx Orange Bowl Courage Award for being the most inspirational and courageous collegiate football player in the nation. In addition, during his tenure at the Academy, he was selected as Brigade Commander becoming the highest-ranking midshipman (student) at the Academy. A position bestowed upon a midshipman of exemplary leadership and integrity.
In 2012, Zerbin Singleton became the last pilot to be trained on CH-46E helicopter in the United States Marine Corps. This helicopter has been flown in every conflict since Vietnam. Zerbin is now flying AH-1Z Cobras. He is a living example that whatever does not kill you, makes you stronger. He shares his powerful story around the country inspiring others to reach heights they never thought were possible, and reminding all that “treading the path of adversity, leads to the destination of your dreams”.
